Ebook About When John Gabriel Stedman’s Narrative of Five Years Expedition was first published in 1796—a bowdlerized edition “full of lies and nonsense”—Stedman claimed to have burned two thousand copies. It nevertheless became an immediate popular success. A first-hand account of an eighteenth-century slave society, including graphic accounts of the worlds of both masters and slaves, it also contained vivid descriptions of exotic plants and animals, of military campaigns, and of romantic adventures. Illustrated by William Blake, Francesco Bartolozzi, and others, Stedman’s work was quickly translated into a half-dozen languages and was eventually published in over twenty-five different editions. The Prices’ acclaimed critical edition is based on Stedman’s original, handwritten manuscript, which offers a portrait at considerable variance with the 1796 classic. The unexpurgated text, presented here with extensive notes and commentary, constitutes one of the richest and most evocative accounts ever written of a flourishing slave society. The Prices restore early omissions involving Stedman’s horror at the Dutch planters’ use of casual torture to discipline their slaves; his love and admiration for Joanna, his mulatto mistress; his strong belief in racial equality; and his outrage that “in 20 Years two millions of People are murdered to Provide us with Coffee & Sugar.” Freed from its original publisher’s censorship, Stedman’s Narrative stands as one of the strongest indictments ever to appear against New World slavery.Book Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Review :
“Narrative of a Five Years’ Expedition, Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the Wild Coast of South America” , by John Gabriel Stedman (1796, misc. editions since; major revision in 1988!). Partial comments by Kristina Gadd in the July 26, 2018 online “Ozy” newsletter:“…in 1777, Stedman sold the rights to his diary to Joseph Johnson, [who after editing it and developing engravings, finally] published it in 1796.“But Stedman was enraged. It turned out that Joseph Johnson had secretly hired an editor to revise the original text and then published a version Stedman condemned as an outright distortion. “My book was printed full of lies and nonsense,” he wrote to his sister-in-law…..“It took nearly two centuries before readers were given an accurate account of Steadman’s Suriname adventure, after historians Richard and Sally Price painstakingly compared his diary to the published version and came out with a new edition in 1988”….[but who substituted some of their own ‘politically correct’ words for some of Steadman’s.]…. “What’s more, descriptions of Stedman’s sexual conquests had been entirely removed, along with his comments on the relationship between enslaved women and their White European masters, a quite common union known as a “Suriname marriage.” Johnson’s editor had also taken Stedman’s middle-of-the-road opinions and made them more pointedly pro-slavery….”[Also], “John Njenga Karugia, a researcher at the Inter-Centre-Programme on new African-Asian Interactions at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany”, [notes some discrepancies in the engravings.] Read Online Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Download Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript PDF Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Mobi Free Reading Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Download Free Pdf Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript PDF Online Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Mobi Online Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Reading Online Narrative of Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam: Transcribed for the First Time From the Original 1790 Manuscript Read Online Richard Price Download Richard Price Richard Price PDF Richard Price Mobi Free Reading Richard Price Download Free Pdf Richard Price PDF Online Richard Price Mobi Online Richard Price Reading Online Richard PriceDownload Mobi The Summer House By Lauren K.
